Utah Phillips: non-violence is a practical necessity

"England is not a free people, ttil the poor that have no land have a free allowance to dig and labour the commons."

Utah Phillips reflects on activist Judi Bari’s view of the two roads of violence and non-violence, then sings the old 17th century Diggers’ song, “World turned upside down.” We will not worship the god they serve . . . the god who feeds the rich while poor men serve. All things in common, all people one, the earth a common treasury for all.” I also include a more riveting rendition of the same song, by Dick Gaughan, BBC 1982.
