Today We Planted Seeds . . .

It may not have looked like a wonderful spring day, but the Moon was waxing in the nurturing water sign of Cancer: perfect day to plant! And, Stephanie and I discovered, an exquisitely appropriate way to transcend nuclear devastation on the other side of the globe, at least temporarily.

So we started seeds in flats for our Green Acres Neighborhood Garden. First, mixing the soil . . .

Next, working at the kitchen table, since it was so cold outside . . .

Two and a half hours later, voila! Stephanie shows off five (of ten) completed trays as my puppy Emma sniffs her armpit.

Then, as if on cue, I found this heartening report from the UN:

Groundbreaking New UN Report on How to Feed the World’s Hungry: Ditch Corporate-Controlled Agriculture

The report advocates “agroecology.” Sounds close to permaculture: using the principles of ecology to grow food. Small, local, using no nasty chemicals and few external inputs; plus, most important, honoring the wisdom of indigenous farmers who have been growing food on their own village grounds for generations.
Getting hands in the dirt . . . aaaaah! Good for the body and, I remembered today, revivifies the soul while incorporated here, in this moment on this precious, precious Planet Earth.
