Laughing at the Recession
Tongue firmly in cheek, the Swami explains the potential benefits of the economic downturn.

In the face of the current economic meltdown, SuperConsciousness Magazine decided to seek out the one individual who could make sense of the absurd situation of financial institutions loaning out 35 times the money on hand – Cosmic Comic Swami Beyondananda. The Swami, who studied with stock market guru Yuan Tibet (“He was a Dowist,” says Swami) made his fortune in the 80s and 90s selling his Ultimate Meditation Tape, which was of course blank (“My guru told me nothing would make me rich, and I decided to prove him right”). We visited the Swami at his Northern California ranch, the Punderosa, in the hopes he could enlighten us up during these dark economic times.
SuperConsciousness: The headlines are depressing, and yet no matter what the situation, Swami, you always have an optimistic outlook. So how about it – do you have anything positive to say about us being in deep financial doo-doo?
Swami: Absolutely. I am positive we are in deep financial doo-doo.
SuperConsciousness: Well, that’s certainly reassuring. But Swami, first of all, how did we get into this mess?
Swami: Well, we must face the sad truth that as a society we’ve been suffering from Deficit Inattention Disorder, and since we were unable to do the math, we must now do the aftermath. It’s a buyo- logical fact. You cannot spend more than you have. Nature knows this. We can use no more energy than what we have in reserve. We cannot charge energy on our Ascended Master Card and repay it next lifetime. So this house of credit cards economy coming down, but there is an upside to the meltdown.
SuperConsciousness: That sounds good, but aren’t there some emergency measures to help people through this crisis?
Swami: To shift financial crisis into financial opportunity, we must change our emphasis from a state of emergency to state of emerge ‘n SEE. We must emerge from our fear-based belief that there is not enough – we call this “scare-city” – and see that our natural state is “a-bun-dance.” That is where we get up off our assets, move our buns in rhythm and flow, face the music and dance together.
SuperConsciousness: That sounds very idealistic, Swami, but is it realistic?
Swami: Well, to turn the ideal into the real deal we must look to nature for clues. After all, underneath our skin we have a thriving economy where 50 trillion cells share and cooperate for the benefit of all. In this community, there is universal health care, full employment, truly no cell left behind. Our cellular society doesn’t need the Ten Commandments, because it lives by the One Suggestion: “We’re all in it together.”
SuperConsciousness: And you’re saying human society can do the same?
Swami: Yes. But first we must realize we are all cells in a new organism called humanity, and the greatest tool in our tool chest is the tool in our own chest – our loving heart. For we are not here to earn God’s love, we’re here to spend it! Supplyside spirituality! By producing greater goodness, we will need fewer goods — and our lives will be richer. That is our “humanifest destiny” – to become interdependently wealthy as we re-grow the Garden, and have a heaven of a time doing it.
