Suze Orman and the petition to forgive student debt

If you haven’t signed the petition yet, do. See below. Notice that it’s almost got the required 500,000 signatures already. Are we surprised?

Here’s an excerpt from Suze Orman, writing in Huffpost, on October 11: “Occupy Wall Street” — Approved!:

“And in my opinion there is no greater example of Washington politicians and K Street lobbyists working against our future prosperity than in the treatment of student loan debt. To be clear, this problem existed even before the crisis; families have been taking on crushing debt to help the kids get ahead for a few decades, as the cost of school has far outpaced inflation. It’s just come to a painful head now: graduates with no jobs, or low paying jobs are justifiably panicked that they will never be able to get the loans paid off. Meanwhile, many well-meaning parents who only wanted to help their kids by taking out loans for college, are now laid off, or in new jobs that pay less. Yet where’s the relief for these borrowers, who took out loans so their kids could compete in the workplace, or better yet, we collectively could compete in the global marketplace? Far from relief, here’s what we have: a bankruptcy system that does not allow student loans to be discharged. Many other debts can be discharged, but not student loans. Look, we want a society where everyone strives to repay their debts. That’s clear. But to single out education loans as the one type of debt that our system specifically prohibits from standard bankruptcy is flat-out wrong. We bail out the banks, but offer nothing to American families that borrowed to become more educated and competitive?”

Want a Real Economic Stimulus and Jobs Plan? Forgive Student Loan Debt!

By Robert Applebaum (Contact)

To be delivered to: The United States House of Representatives, The United States Senate and President Barack Obama

Forgiving the student loan debt of all Americans will have an immediate stimulative effect on our economy. With the stroke of the President’s pen, millions of Americans would suddenly have hundreds, or in some cases, thousands of extra dollars in their pockets each and every month with which to spend on ailing sectors of the economy. As consumer spending increases, businesses will begin to hire, jobs will be created and a new era of innovation, entrepreneurship and prosperity will be ushered in for all. A rising tide does, in fact, lift all boats – forgiving student loan debt, rather than tax cuts for corporations, millionaires and billionaires, has a MUCH greater chance of helping to rise that tide in a MUCH shorter time-frame. The future economic success of this country is wholly dependent upon a well-educated, prosperous middle class. Instead of saddling entire generations with debt from which there is no escape, let’s empower the American people to grow this economy on their own! Therefore, we, the undersigned, strongly encourage Congress and the President to support H. Res 365, introduced by Rep. Hansen Clarke (D-MI), seeking student loan forgiveness as a means of economic stimulus.

For over 30 years, the rich have gotten richer, the poor have gotten poorer, and the middle class is slowly but surely being squeezed out of existence. Instead of more of the same corporate welfare/”trickle-down” economics that have been an abysmal failure for the middle class, why not try a trickle-up approach to rebuilding our economy by targeting relief at those most likely to actually help grow the economy?

  1. Hey, I paid for my own (very expensive) education.

Why should I be robbed to pay for yours, or that of your children?

Up through High School, I am willing. But many people study nonsense of no practical value in college, or go there “to have a good time”, and I am unwilling to have my tax dollars support that. So get real, grow up, and take responsibility. What is wrong with America today, is too many people live beyond their means, and expect others to foot the bill.

  2. THE STUDENT LOAN WILL HELP ME GET OF DEBT. I HAVE BEEN PAYING FOR OVER 8YRS BUT THE LOAN AMOUNT IS ALMOST THE SAME AS THOUGH I JUST CAME OUT OF COLLEGE. I DON’T UNDERSTAND.
    I NEED HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. I took out a student loan in 1987, I believe the amount was under 10k (it was a photography school) after my graduation the school was discredited. Throughout my adulthood I have had my tax refund taken for double the amount of the original loan and I still owe 28 thousand dollars. I understand I made mistakes and ignored this debt for awhile, but isn’t there a point where the Government can say they’ve taken their pound of flesh and just simply forgive the debt? If anyone knows anyone who can help me with this please respond.
