PHOTOS: Thursday Community Dinner, March 17: St. Patty’s Day DUCKS!

You just never know what’s coming next, eh? Thursday’s dinner did feature some green food — plus, the first outdoor fire of the year afterwards! — but the ducks were the main draw. Both that evening and the next day.

I missed the ducks at night, since when the meal started I was down at the city’s Sustainability Commission meeting telling them we’d love to have them check into grey water laws in this town, what can be done to change them, since part of the new five-year plan for our newly renamed Green Acres Permaculture Village is to begin to use grey water on gardens. Turns out the bad laws exist at the county and state level, but there may be a way we can come in below the radar and still be legal. They have a water subcommittee and are excited to look into it for us, recognizing that since we are experimenting with transformative templates for new, cooperative ways of living inside existing suburbs, that many many people would be interested to see what we are doing.

So, by the time I got home, the ducks had already been pulled out of the living room.

We thank Aaron, who brought them from his permaculture farm to our permaculture village for an “outing,” for the kids, and for the pond. Pod-mate Leah took the evening photos; I took those by the pond.

The next day, while cleaning out the basement with new pod-mate Derek, I got to see the ducks, now in the pond with adoring audience.

Whoopee! It’s nearly Spring Equinox, and Nature just keeps on regenerating, despite all our attempts to control her.
