On 25th Anniversary of Harmonic Convergence: How are we doing?

Twenty-five years ago this weekend, I was twirling with Gaye Luce and 50 New Age “Mystery School” people from California in a 40-foot diameter ceremonial yurt in the Tetons. Gaye had invited me to be their astrologer for the weekend, which promised to be one for the ages. People all over the world were gathering at sacred sites in a globally synchronized meditation to celebrate what Jose Arguelles, in his book, The Mayan Factor, had promised to be the beginning of the end of the Mayan Long Count that would end history as we know it and initiate a new 5,125 year cycle. The intent was decisive: if 144,000 people focused on peace and harmony, the world would transform. The 25 years between August 16-17, 1987, and December 21, 2012 would usher in an increasing awareness of our oneness as the separative structures that had been governing our world dissolved.

How are we doing?

Yesterday morning, I woke up and realized that this was the very weekend of the 25th anniversary of the Harmonic Convergence! The recognition startled me. Unbeknownst to my conscious self, I had agreed to host a Garden Party for “Sustainable Indiana 2016” in the GANG garden on that very afternoon. What a fabulous way to inadvertently celebrate the 25th anniversary!

The GANG (Green Acres Neighborhood Garden).

At the original Harmonic Convergence, while twirling in a Sufi dance at midnight in that giant ceremonial yurt, I had received a distinct inner message: “You must finish your personal karma by the end of the year.” I knew exactly what that was. I would have to go back and confront? speak with? make peace with? my ex-husband so that I could get back together with my children. Long story, as you can imagine. I had no idea how I would do this, or what it would involve, but over the next few months, my higher self revealed the way.

That decision, to follow through with what the inner voice commanded, even though at the time I had no idea how, has propelled my life for the past 25 years. With major personal karma out of the way, my life transformed.

Nine months later, I met the man, Jeffrey Joel, who would become my husband. I founded and published a magazine Crone Chronicles: Journal of Conscious Aging (1989-2001), that was featured in many big city newspapers and on Good Morning America and helped usher in a transformed way of viewing and experiencing the aging process. I also edited the successor magazine to that one, Crone: Women Coming of Age, for its first few years, starting in 2005.

In 2002, we moved from Jackson, Wyoming to Bloomington, Indiana, so that Jeff could go to law school at Indiana University. Three months later, he died. That initiated the most transformative year of my life, a formal process of conscious grieving that I later wrote up as the book This Vast Being: A Voyage of Grief and Exaltation.

In 2007, I took the permaculture training, and the next year, bought the property next to mine because it had a large sunny side lawn that I could transform into a neighborhood permaculture garden as one example of a public/private template for regenerating both local food and a sense of community.

So, yesterday. Our Garden Party was held in the GANG garden in dappled shade on a gloriously cool day,

with about 30 people attending altogether, both local, and from as far away as Indianapolis and Louisville.

The Louisville family, who would like to return to Bloomington, but are promoting sustainable initiatives in Louisviille meanwhile.

Many of the folks present represented other local sustainability initiatives, including Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard and Bloomington Community Orchard.

People wandered the garden . . .

That’s Ria, a long-time garden and community activist, with Stephanie, our director for the GANG garden this year.

Then we converged back to the community area, with table laden with food supplied by our long-standing fabulous local food co-op, Bloomingfoods, and prepared by Lucile, the grandmother of all things sustainable in this town, founder and former president of the Bloomington Center for Sustainable Living . . .

Lucile also organizes and co-teaches the GOES (Grow Organic Educator Series) classes, a three-hour weekly, three month class sponsored by the city of Bloomington. I took it last fall, and barely passed the test at the end (even though I studied!). So much to learn . . .

Lucile’s entire yard, by the way is a Certified Wildlife Habitat, another program she initiated that is now promoted by the city of Bloomington.

This Garden Party event got decided, by the way, when I ran into her while we were both out walking just over two weeks ago (I had just returned from the latest Seattle adventure with the folks and family), and she told me that an initiative called Sustainable Indiana 2016 was holding regional Garden Parties on August 18th, and wanted to do one in Bloomington, and would I host it in the GANG Garden? Okay, I said, and right then and there we agreed to the hours we would hold it — 2-5 p.m. — and hoped the heat would dissipate beforehand. IT DID.

BTW: I have seriously called in the rain three times (I mean energentically, with a kind of enormous pulling motion) since I returned from Seattle, and all three times it rained within 8 hours. These are the only times it has rained. The third time was a serious rain, only 48 hours prior to our Garden Party. Mere coincidence?

On the day prior to the party, Jim (the young permie who currently lives with me) told me three hawks had been circling the garden, and that he saw a giant black and gold butterfly hovering over the pond.

Lucile identified it as a “giant swallowtail.”

Back to the Garden Party . . .

At this point, the man who represented “Sustainable Indiana 2016” spoke, and then handed me a certificate, and a sign.

With official business out of the way, we got down to serious business. First, our wonderful, hilarious local Raging Grannies group sang a few of their inimitable protest/social and earth justice songs.

That’s Lucile, in the center.

Aaron

After that, Aaron asked if we wanted start out storytelling with a little meditation, to the sound of his flute. YES!

Aaron followed the meditation with a tale of his travels recently to Earthhaven, an ecovillage in North Carolina, and permaculture gatherings.

Other storytellers chimed in, including Blue Butterfly Woman, who told us the story of how she got her name, followed by a Native American story.

Before our storytelling session began, I announced to the group that this weekend happened to be the 25th anniversary of the Harmonic Convergence! Of course the young people in the group didn’t blink an eye, but the older ones among us, those who were aware and awake during that storied time, did. In fact, they gasped, in shock.

Blue said, “Ah . . . I was in Mexico.” Lucile was in New Jersey. And I was in the Tetons. I told the group the same truncated version of the story above of how I completed my personal karma — when Blue gasped out loud.

Afterwards, she came over to me, sat down, and said (I paraphrase):

Just last week I finally completed the same kind of process with my ex-husband! After 15 years! It’s so hard to forgive. Finally, I had to let it go and give it to God.

I didn’t get a chance to tell Blue that at the time I got back together with the father of my sons it had also been 15 years . . .

As I sat there in the dappled light listening to our stories, I felt myself entranced, bathed in love, surrounded in love, and supported energetically by the community that is beginning to coalesce around this Green Acres Neighborhood Garden, now four years old, and increasingly magical.

So yes, how are we doing? I sense that the journey I’ve been on over these past 25 years is echoed in millions of places across this beautiful Earth by people old enough to have been aware of the Harmonic Convergence, and determined to focus energetically with others to gradually, and decidedly increase the vibration of this planet.

I’d say that, despite the current appearances of doom and gloom, that we’re doing fine.

Hallelujah!
