I’ve been on pins and needles this morning waiting to see just how draconian the military judge’s sentence would be. The sentence came down at about 10:15 am GMT.
Meanwhile, his lawyers will appeal, the 3.55 years already spent in jail will count, and he will be eligible for parole in about slightly over 8 years (one third of sentence). So yes, as he and his defense lawyers begged the judge, he will still be able to “have a life.”
From the guardian:
Meanwhile, all the real perps of state-sponsored violence that Manning did his part to expose continue on their merry compartmentalized ways.

BTW: Lest we grow too smug in our assessment on how different are the violent ones from ourselves, here’s an amazing comment on the guardian that might have been made by every man and every woman alive today. Who of us has not condoned the accelerating stasi state by our silence?
