When something breaks, I usually go buy a “new” one. It’s a reflex action. Utterly unthinking. Now it may be that I personally could not actually repair something. But I know plenty of people who can, including Katarina, one of my young housemates. The first time I saw her knowing hands wrap themselves around an object that was giving me trouble, I knew.
Last winter, podmate Rebecca darned a pair of my socks that blew out their heel. I was going to “throw them away,” even though there is no away.
Darning. What a concept!
(I do replace buttons.)
