Is Vladimir Putin the “Mars in Leo” for this moment’s world stage?

On the evening before Barack Obama was scheduled to speak, I put up a chart for that event, and made two predictions.

The first, that there would be a (I would say now, confusing) back-and-forth between Aries and Libra, between going one’s own way and diplomacy, certainly seemed to come true.

The second, that someone who personified that chart’s Mars in Leo would come forth to actually lead the way through the powerful, difficult five-planet configuration, may also be bearing fruit.

BTW: remember, we are all the Mars in Leo we are looking for, all needed to lead the way, find our courage, take charge, carve a path through whatever seemingly impossible difficulties present themselves now. And, to do so consciously! With awareness and gratitude for both the gift of courage and the circumstances that call our courage forth.

The only difference between us depends on which stage each of us is called to stand upon. For the world stage, witness now Vladimir Putin, who wrote an intense op-ed for the New York Times yesterday, and whose natal chart features courageous, lion-hearted, powerful Pluto at 22° in Leo closely conjunct the 21° Leo Midheaven.

Putin is a member of what I call the “me” generation, the Pluto in Leo generation (born between 1938 and 1958). In the U.S., we grew up in the placid, patriotic ’40s and ’50s to enter the ’60s and, once Uranus and Pluto conjuncted (1962-1968) grew our hair long, started smoking dope and singing and dancing to our “far out,” “do my thing” mantra. And then, unfortunately, as time went on, many of us cosmic/earthy hippies morphed into obese, or hard-bodied, uber-materialists, building McMansions and driving sales of SUVs. All very imperial, unevolved Pluto in Leo.

So, let’s face it, we all thought of ourselves as “exceptional,” the very word Putin picked up on from Obama’s speech of the night before and derided. I quote from Putin’s op-ed again, as I feel it is, or should be a game-changer.

It is extremely dangerous to encourage people to see themselves as exceptional, whatever the motivation. There are big countries and small countries, rich and poor, those with long democratic traditions and those still finding their way to democracy. Their policies differ, too. We are all different, but when we ask for the Lord’s blessings, we must not forget that God created us equal.

Putin, is also a member of one sub-generation of Pluto in Leo that I call “harmonizing turbulence,” those born in 1952 and 1953 who have long-cycled planets Saturn/Neptune together in the peacemaking sign of Libra square (90° angle, in friction with) long-cycled Uranus in Cancer, sign of home, family, and community.

Make that the larger human family, as this is what Putin is addressing.

That Vladmir Putin would be called to make conscious what is usually an unconscious signature (processing one-on-one within turbulent family dynamics), is also interesting, since not only did the soul of Putin decide to come in during precisely those two years, but chose to come in on a day when the Sun would illuminate this important signature, and thus, possibly, make it conscious.

Putin’s chart features Saturn/Neptune conjunct the Sun and Mercury, in the 12th house of hidden, collectively karmic situations that need to be resolved with justice and fairness for all the players.

Admittedly, it’s hard to trust anyone with a Scorpio ascendant! (Designed for both intensity and concealment, their stony faces do not reveal intent.) And his background as head of the KBG still haunts. However, I do think Putin is coming into his soul’s calling now, and that he very may well be the Leo that humanity needs to serve, at least for now, as the lead goose who takes on the headwinds and sets the direction; the one who, at least for now, helps us to step aside from the seemingly unstoppable and insane suicidal momentum towards ecocide that the still-galloping U.S. war-machine ignited by dropping not one, but two atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.
