Green Acres Sign Saga Darkens . . .

On my way downtown this afternoon, I am stunned to see that the new Green Acres sign at 7th and Union has been wrenched off its post. Immediately, I pull over and send this text to two people: Vickie Provine at the HAND (Housing and Neighborhood Development) Department of the city, who shepherded the group of four young people who successfully pursued the arduous process of applying applying for and following through with a $10,000 Neighborhood Improvement Grant for five signs at the entrances to our Green Acres Neighborhood; and I sent the email to Katarina, who took on the responsibility of leading that group from start to finish.

After one year in preparation, the signs started to go up not even two weeks ago. The timing is significant: the incident occurred sometime during the last few days, at the end of the IU semester. The stolen sign is the smallest of the five. I imagine it wrenched off its post during a late night revelry, and then stuffed into some student’s car on his or her way out of town as a memento. This is not the first time such a thing has occurred around here. I had a cat that disappeared suspiciously at the same time of year. I did wonder beforehand if we should see if we should insure the signs.

Here’s the email thread:

And here’s the email with photos I just sent to Officer Frank.

And it certainly helps us recognize just how difficult it is to live as a sharing, caring community within the larger university setting, where some students steal stuff just for fun. The dolphins, in the fountain on the IU campus — how many times have they been stolen?

I hope that somehow, this sign can be retrieved. If anyone knows anything, please convey it to me. Thanks.
