Francis Crick on DNA: Intelligent Design

I was talking with my daughter-in-law a few years ago, and she picked up on the fact that I don’t think human evolution came about through a random Darwinian process. (By the way, I read somewhere that Darwin didn’t either, that we have misrepresented his views. Wish I could find that reference . . .)

I said, no, that the Christian fundamentalists have it right, the universe is the product of Intelligent Design. They might use this idea to justify their idea of God, and I might see its workings in another way, but above all, I’m sure that evolutionary changes are not random, but purposeful, and teleological, going in a certain direction.

Sue was surprised. Trained as a scientist, she had assumed that any educated person like myself would agree with her.

I told her about two early pioneers who I discovered in the early ’60s. Their views dovetailed, and activated something within me that just keeps growing!

One, the Jesuit anthropologist Teilhard de Jardin, invented the term “noosphere” to identify what humanity will evolve into — a web of consciousness circling the globe. (One could say that de Jardin predicted the Internet; I imagine he’d say no, that the internet is the technological precursor of something more sacred and profound: global telepathic communion: see my various posts on Neptune in Pisces.)

And the other, Arthur C Clarke, his visionary sci fi book Childhood’s End, wherein, as I recall, an entire generation of children shifts into a swirling vortex and lifts off the Earth. (And now we talk about indigo and crystal and star children with powers and talents way beyond ours. I think of my grandchildren in this arena, both of them with startling awareness and intelligence.)

Now, thanks to George Filer in this week’s Filer’s Files, I learn about Francis Crick’s view of evolution and DNA.

Frances Crick, the discoverer of DNA won the Nobel Prize for physiology/medicine. Crick and James Watson showed that each strand of the DNA molecule was a template for the other. During cell division the two strands separate and each strand s — other half” is built, just like the one before. This way DNA can reproduce itself without changing its structure. DNA’s discovery has been called the most important biological work of the last 100 years, and the field it opened may be the scientific frontier for the next 100.

Sir Francis Crick stated it best:

“Life did not evolve first on Earth; a highly advanced civilization became threatened so they devised a way to pass on their existence. They genetically-modified their DNA and sent it out from their planet on bacteria or meteorites with the hope that it would collide with another planet. It did, and that’s why we’re here. The DNA molecule is the most efficient information storage system in the entire universe. The immensity of complex, coded and precisely sequenced information is absolutely staggering. The DNA evidence speaks of intelligent, information-bearing design.

Complex DNA coding would have been necessary for even the hypothetical first so-called’ simple cell(s). Our DNA was encoded with messages from that other civilization. They programmed the molecules so that when we reached a certain level of intelligence, we would be able to access their information, and they could therefore — teach” us about ourselves, and how to progress. For life to form by chance is mathematically virtually impossible.”
