I find the Venus Project interesting in that Jacque Fresco, the futurist from whose mind and imagination the project springs, distinguishes between a money-based and a resource-based economy. He advocates for the disappearance of money and in its place the human recognition that resources of the globe need to be held in common. Much else follows or is implied, as you can see from this video.

I get a little queasy at Fresco’s grand scale, top-down social and technical engineering solutions. Nowhere are decentralization, relocalization, organic, bottom-up approaches mentioned. One could argue that his is another kind of “New World Order” that could trap us into one man’s gigantic redesign of the world as a Platonic philosopher king. All well and good if he really does understand the intricacies of the totality of the biosphere in which we live. But does he? Can he? Can anyone? Isn’t there always more to understand without which the intricate balance of everything suddenly, or eventually, goes haywire? Fresco’s is a systematically left-brained approach. What about Nature’s right brain? Let’s face it: Nature is much more mysterious and multidimensional than even the cleverest engineer.

However, Fresco’s remarks are extremely provocative and stimulating. Always a good thing.
