Back in the late ’60s, our rhythmic, pounding, ringing music aroused us to “sex, drugs, rock ‘n roll” — and social and political activism. The entire world was aflame with idealism, the revolution was at hand, and we were the young warriors who would lead humanity into the brave new world where love is in the air, everyone is equal, and war no more.
I have often marveled to realize that no music since then has fully captured the youth of any generation. Instead, each generation’s young ones still play our old songs! They still listen to Dylan, and The Band, the Stones, Peter, Paul and Mary, Joannie Baez, and yes, Simon and Garfunkel — generations of all ages singing and dancing along with us creaky, crotchety, older and hopefully wiser ones from the ’60s generation now in our 70s and still looking for America. Can you believe! Our astounding music from nearly 50 years ago still holds us, embraces us, across the generations; and now, with Bernie, our music propels us, once again, into collective action.
Are we crazy to think that this time we can do it, we can dissolve the ossified, constipated, oligarc-ic powers that pretend to be in an authentic grassroots arising that “takes this country by storm”?

Dear Ann and Laura,
I am a supporter of Bernie’s from Vermont. I have written to you before. In August of 2011 I wrote this ad which ran as a third of a page black and white ad in the Burlington 7 Days Weekly. It was in support of Bill McKibben as he and 350.org protested in front of the White House. Needless to say, Bernie’s office is in Burlington and I suspect there are many people in his campaign who read my ad. I am delighted that it stayed in their consciousness and came out again at this moment in time. I do believe the music is one of the things that connects us to the Uranus Pluto energy of the 1960’s and a time when we did not finish what we started. I will turn 60 on Groundhog Day so I am of the generation that grew up with music that inspires. The music is something that can help Bernie win. Let’s focus on that because that is energy can help him pull out in front where he clearly belongs. We all have our part to play in this divine comedy called life. In no way am I looking for personal recognition on this. It is simply an illustration of how we never know the ripple effects our actions will have further down the road. For me it, and a few other things that happened within days of see his ad, provided a wonderful life review just a few days before my birthday as I reach the beginning of another decade. This past year many dreams died including my breakup with a man I planned to marry. Still, new beginning are wonderful at any age.

I am in talks with Country Joe McDonald to rewrite the lyrics for The Fish Cheer to make them about bringing industrial hemp back to America. His agent is a great guy.
