All waste is food department: Swedish town heats 200,000 homes with 300,000 tons of waste

When I lived in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, that mountain valley trucked all its waste to a landfill in Pinedale, Wyoming. In Bloomington, Indiana, where I now live, I just researched that question and discovered that the city trucks most of solid waste to Sycamore Ridge Landfill, 55 miles away! Plus, Bloomington still picks up leaves, if we leave them on the curb or put them in special “yard waste” bags that cost $1 each. Just this past Fall the city finally began to urge citizens to rake those leaves onto gardens, or keep them for compost piles. . .

Since 1991, Bloomington has had a recycling program and picks up paper products, glass containers, steel cans, aluminum cans and plastics (#1-7). Hey! How about keeping the paper products for lasagna gardens?

Here’s a Swedish town that burns its waste to heat its homes. Again, the organic part of that waste might be better used in lasagna gardens. . .
