I posted this old essay some time ago, and am prompted to post it again, since it strikes to the heart of the main (fatal?) symptom of our sick society, the tendency to polarize into warring camps, and then trash “the Other.”
It interests me that Qanon has mentioned the phenomenon of “projection” a number of times recently, wherein we consciously or unconsciously see in “the Other” a quality that exists within ourselves. To “take back the projection” is thus both necessary and sufficient to dissolve the polarity. And yet, to do so, requires consciousness, awareness, not just of what is going on outside, but of what is going on inside. (See this morning’s post, which gives a brief introduction to cultivating “double-consciousness.”)
