A Baby Boomer’s Apology for his generation stupidly wasting this beautiful Earth’s precious, finite resources

When I moved to Bloomington in 2003, there were very few giant SUVs. Now there are lots of them. They compete with the expanding number of pius Priuses. I have a feeling that mostly baby boomers (and college students with rich parents) drive both (most young people can’t afford either one, they are so saddled with student debt while working dead-end jobs). The SUV people drive to and from their McMansions (also a development of the last ten years here); the pius Priuses to smaller homes like mine, where I’m just about to get solar put on a new metal roof.

At dinner with another baby boomer the other night, he questioned the idea of solar for me. Says the ROI isn’t good at this stage of my life. Well, I had to look up “ROI” — and when I did I remember my own Dad saying he didn’t care about the tailing pile from the old mine upriver from our cabin in the mountains of Idaho, because it wouldn’t affect him before he died! That attitude stunned me at the time and has haunted me ever since. Now I find the same attitude in how one baby boomer calculates my ROI: my life span. Just me. Yuck! No thanks.
