What the forest can teach us humans

Note: apparently, I’m back, at least for now. See last post.

As I make ready to travel to tomorrow’s all day workshop on Community in Ohio, Rhonda sends out this short, potent video about what the Forest has to teach us about community, or, maybe I should say, how we need to re-member community.

• Both forest and human communities, when regenerative, have their Mother Trees.

• Both need diversity.

• Both pass the wand from one generation to the next.

• Both communicate via complex, invisible, bonds underneath.

• Both flourish in mutual aid rather than mutual competition.

Anyone who as read my writings or heard me speak has heard me say that one of the most embarrassing aspects of my life is that I hold a degree in business administration. I say this because the marketing classes are courses in psychological warfare-playing on people’s insecurities to get them to buy things they don’t want or need. The second reason is the economic models we studied were linear in nature… only valuing the natural resources when extracted, milled and sold… no value for the resource or responsibility for the waste.

It was while mopping up a large forest fire in that same part of Washington state that is now burning that I got a lesson in “natural economic”. I happened on to a small intact eco-system. there young seedlings were growing out of the decay of fallen snags… all stages of growth to maturity and standing snags.. which were home to various wildlife and perhaps with the next wind, falling to the ground to become the soil for future generations. I then understood what was missing from my economic classes… the connection, the continuum.
