Which brings us back to the question, just what is intelligence? It seems to me that intelligence runs through all of life, through everything, seeking expression via the various senses different species possess, whether animal or vegetable or rock, or spirit . . . How can we say a hippo is less intelligent? Or an elk? We can’t. And furthermore, unlike with humans, animal intelligence seems to be automatically linked with compassion.
On the other hand, some humans are oriented that way as well. My friend Susan Chernak is one of them. She is here, on planet Earth, for the animals. I remember one winter she rescued a baby mouse and helped it to adulthood. Even the tiniest creature, for her, reveals an entire universe. Every beautifully crafted post she puts up on her blog, Animals as Teachers and Healers, reflects her compassion and her gift. Yesterday, she rescued a baby bat, and returned it to his mom. That took some doing. Astonishing.
