The “right to work” phrase reminds me of “citizens united” and the MX “peacekeeper” missile: all use Orwellian language. In his dystopian novel, 1984, Orwell had a word for black is white thinking: blackwhite: “The ability to accept whatever “truth” the party puts out, no matter how absurd it may be. Orwell described it as “…loyal willingness to say black is white when party discipline demands this. It also means the ability to believe that black is white, and more, toknow black is white, and forget that one has ever believed the contrary.”
On this day when the local paper carries top headline news that “‘Right to work’ passes” in the Indiana House of Representatives, on this day when Indiana Senate approval is also expected and “Indiana is poised to become the first ‘right to work’ state in more than a decade,” I remember questions to anarchist Emma Goldman, about Hitler and Roosevelt, and her answers:
