Believe it or not, Bates (and others) also advocates a long-term solution to global warming (though it will take decades, and not even then only unless we focus locally on the soils of the entire planet): biochar, which sequesters carbon from the air to the soil, where it will remain for millions of years, while holding water and providing continuous fertility. Since the U.N. has declared 2015 as the U.N. Year of the Soil, perhaps we can take this seemingly quixotic solution seriously?
