Naomi Klein in The Nation:
Oh wow, check out this!
Hillary lies. But tries not to? Tries to tell the truth? Doesn’t believe that she has ever lied? Huh? Lies imply intentionality. The way she talks about lies happens to be what philosophers call a “category mistake.”
Okay, maybe she should have said “mistake,” rather than lie? As in, note passive voice, “mistakes were made.” Ever heard that one before? Even so, “mistake” would at least give her the benefit of the doubt. We might pretend that yes, indeed, poor beleagered Hillary tries to tell the truth. But with lies, either you’re (deliberately) lying or you aren’t. Period. No wonder we don’t trust her.
