This clip, from the movie Margin Call, doesn’t answer the question in my title to this post. But we can always ask it. And the answer usually has to do with keeping our present comfort level going (whatever that is) while at least subconsciously grasping to “get ahead.” However, now that more and more people, even in the rich U.S., are operating on “survival money” rather than “luxury money,” all bets are off. People who have nothing more to lose either zombie-out or they wake up.
“If freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose, then revolution could be just another word for nothing left to eat.” — Wayne Roberts.
Or maybe, we should amend this quote to, nothing REAL left to eat. See last post.

To this clip, J.C. Collins adds:
This is why the solution has to come from within, as every system will simply corrupt again. Philosophers and great thinkers have warned us continuously for thousands of years. The manifestation of inner dysfunction and imbalance will always be represented physically as dysfunction and imbalances in the systems man develops.
Exactly. First, know thyself in order to heal thyself. The healing of the world proceeds from there, inside each of us, becoming heart-based, open, networking with others, decentralized, moving towards a sharing economy and simplified lifestyle where quality of life counts more than quantity of stuff, and money gradually becomes obsolete. A big order, I know. Rather like climbing an impossible wall with our fingertips. But it’s already happening! See shareable.net.
