Walrus mass in vast numbers on Alaska beach as sea ice retreats

Concern that warming climate is responsible for gathering of about 35,000 walrus in north-west Alaska

Pacific walrus that can’t find sea ice for resting in Arctic waters are coming ashore in record numbers on a beach in north-west Alaska.

An estimated 35,000 walrus were photographed on Saturday about five miles north of Point Lay, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Point Lay is an Inupiat village 700 miles (1,126 kilometres) north-west of Anchorage.

The enormous gathering was spotted during NOAA’s annual arctic marine mammal aerial survey, spokeswoman Julie Speegle said by email.

The gathering of walrus on shore is a phenomenon that has accompanied the loss of summer sea ice as the climate has warmed.

Pacific walrus spend winters in the Bering Sea. Females give birth on sea ice and use ice as a diving platform to reach snails, clams and worms on the shallow continental shelf.

Unlike seals, walrus cannot swim indefinitely and must rest. They use their tusks to “haul out”, or pull themselves onto ice or rocks.

As temperatures warm in summer, the edge of the sea ice recedes north. Females and their young ride the edge of the sea ice into the Chukchi Sea, the body of water north of the Bering Strait.

In recent years, sea ice has receded north beyond shallow continental shelf waters and into Arctic Ocean water, where depths exceed two miles and walrus cannot dive to the bottom.

The World Wildlife Fund said walrus had also been gathering in large groups on the Russian side of the Chukchi Sea.

“It’s another remarkable sign of the dramatic environmental conditions changing as the result of sea ice loss,” said Margaret Williams, managing director of the group’s Arctic program.

“The walruses are telling us what the polar bears have told us and what many indigenous people have told us in the high Arctic, and that is that the Arctic environment is changing extremely rapidly and it is time for the rest of the world to take notice and also to take action to address the root causes of climate change.”

This summer, the sea ice’s annual low point was the sixth smallest since satellite monitoring began in 1979.

Walrus in large numbers were first spotted on the US side of the Chukchi Sea in 2007. They returned in 2009, and in 2011 scientists estimated 30,000 walruses appeared along a half-mile stretch of beach near Point Lay.

Young animals are vulnerable to stampedes when a large group gathers on a beach. Stampedes can be triggered by a polar bear, human hunter or low-flying airplane.

The carcasses of more than 130 mostly young walrus were counted after a stampede in September 2009 at Alaska’s Icy Cape.

A spokeswoman for the US Fish and Wildlife Service, Andrea Medeiros, said this year the walrus were first spotted on 13 September and had been moving on and off shore.

Observers last week saw about 50 carcasses on the beach from animals that may have been killed in a stampede, and the agency was assembling a necropsy team to determine their cause of death.

“They’re going to get them out there next week,” she said.

There is no doubt that our prevailing human disconnect with nature herself is destroying our habitat. We should have long ago recognized that our manipulations and mistreatment of nature would backfire, and threaten our own specie’s survival. The fossil fuel industry and utility companies stand in the way of these cleaner technologies. I also believe that we have energy technologies that are being suppressed, for obvious reasons.
But there is evidence that all planets in our solar system are heating up. Our Earth has undergone many dramatic climate changes in the past, predating the industrial revolution. It could very well be that our man-made poisons for profit, are hastening this natural process. There is also evidence that Fukushima radiation is having a disastrous effect on animals, altering their behaviors.
I believe it is the general mistreatment of nature, combined with natural sun fluctuations that are affecting our planet.
My concern is the appearance of geoengineering, especially “solar radiation management” aka chemtrails, as an answer to these changes. Spraying our Earth with nano-particles of aluminum, barium, and strontium as a answer to global warming, might be the cover for more nefarious motives. I no longer trust hidden agendas put forth by mainstream media, and I consider the Guardian to be mainstream media.
If the climate change movement accelerates a positive shift in the way we treat Earth,(and each other) and galvanizes people to gather together to work for freedom against unecessary corruption, then I am all for it.
But I have my doubts about anything the government or their mouthpiece, the mainstream media, supports. I have just been burned one too many times, to jump on their bandwagon.

In addition to the other planets heating up, isn’t there record ice level in Antarctica? Could this also have something to do with the poles being “on the move”? As I’ve said, manmade Earth poisoning is no joke, and neither are chemtrails. Obviously, we need to curtail consumption, but the planet has gone through periods of mass extinctions at other times when humans weren’t here. Alternative media’s content to blame most things on Fukushima, but what if something else is contributing to the radiation on this planet? Something even bigger than Fukushima and all the leaking nuke plants, which, no doubt, are horrible polluters? What if the warming and changes only have minimally to do with CO2?

I support people changing their relationship to Earth — just wish it didn’t need to turn into a new socialist religion. We have plenty of old Earth traditions that we could turn to without turning ourselves into corporate and media pawns. Not soooo long ago, sovereignty and the land went together, and the health of the land was considered a direct indication of the quality or depravity of its leaders. Leaders were required to sacrifice themselves to the land, not destroy the land and its people. I’d be curious to see how much this planet will heal just by removing the psychopathic, parasitic leaders who wouldn’t know a sacred tree if it uprooted itself and knocked them into a never-ending sinkhole, which … come to think of it … isn’t such a bad idea. 😉

The climate change mantra does have a religious zeal about it. I just don’t trust Al Gore. It seems as if there is a fervor feel to the whole thing. Our government pushes the idea of climate change, yet seems to continue to allow the fossil fuel industry and utility companies full sway. It no longer adds up for me, something fishy going on. Are we being psychologically prepared to accept geoengineering or perhaps a new tax?

      • laurabruno says:

Probably both, plus Agenda 21 relocations. They are priming people to beg for their own imprisonment.

California”‘s dominance of US fruit and veg production (numbers from the the California Department of Food and Agriculture (PDF)) is dizzying.

The state produces 99 percent of the artichokes grown in the US, 44 percent of asparagus, a fifth of cabbage, two-thirds of carrots, half of bell peppers, 89 percent of cauliflower, 94 percent of broccoli, and 95 percent of celery. Leafy greens? California’s got the market cornered: 90 percent of the leaf lettuce we consume, along with and 83 percent of Romaine lettuce and 83 percent of fresh spinach.
Chemtrail activists believe that the drought in California is deliberately induces.
Many are mistakenly calling short spray trails “condensation” and not realizing that this is just another form of aerosol spraying. The “spray light” is common under less humid conditions and high pressure zones. This type of spraying transforms the skies into a silvery white haze or “cob web” clouds that many are so accustomed to they no longer even consider it unnatural. UV radiation readings are often actually higher under this type of spraying application, a “lens” affect. Is this intentional heating in order to increase the strength of high pressure zones? High pressure spins clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere. The manipulation of high pressure helps to steer the jet stream. The unprecedented high pressure over the west is also a major cause of the current and rapidly worsening catastrophic drought.

Another part of the puzzle is likely this, a population that has no water and can not grow any food does not tend to be in a position to effectively protest the crimes of it’s government. California has historically grown so much food for the nation that the catastrophic drought has very far reaching ramifications. Control the food supply and you control the population. There is also the growing effort by the government to take control of water rights in California and other regions in the west. The climate engineers literally have California by the throat and it does not appear they are going to let go anytime soon. The weather makers can drought California into a desert from top to bottom, we are well on our way to this already.

With the combination of constant aerosol spraying and ionosphere heater utilization (HAARP) the climate engineers have effectively cut off the flow of moisture to the state of California. Why? There are likely a number of probable reasons. First, California is possibly a climate “sacrifice zone”. This means that California is collateral damage for the constant parade of engineered snow storms that occurred further east in the US all winter long. The rain blocking high pressure ridge that the climate engineers have locked in place over the western US and the eastern Pacific pushes the jet stream straight north, carrying the moisture with it before rain can come anywhere near California. This moisture then travels as far as Alaska and the Arctic (Alaska logged its warmest January on record). The jet is then turned back south as it wraps clockwise around the HAARP/ionosphere heater created dome of high pressure. Then, it is pumped all the way down to the southern US carrying heavily sprayed and chemically ice nucleated moisture with it which enhances the artificial cool down of the eastern US.

          Agenda 21 anyone?
More American cities are following New York City’s lead in developing “micro apartments” as small as 220 square feet, allowing city officials to gain more tax revenue and control at the expense of their residents’ mental health.

In Austin, Texas, real estate developers are currently working with the city council to amend zoning regulations to allow developers to build more coffin apartments, which would allow the city to expand the tax base and promote dependence on public transportation heavily subsidized by taxpayers. Psychiatrists warn that these micro-sized units can lead to claustrophobia, domestic abuse and even alcoholism. The cities green-lighting the development of coffin apartments are motivated in part by the expanded tax base resulting from packing as many people as possible within city limits.

And because parking is already at a premium in urban areas, city officials attempting to implement the United Nations Agenda 21 Sustainable Development program will exploit the increased population density to demand the development of expensive and inefficient public rail systems which increase centralized government control while also reducing the use of private transportation.Signed in 1992 by President George H.W. Bush and later phased in by President Bill Clinton, the Agenda 21 program is based on communitarianism, which calls for government to eventually take control of all land use without leaving any decision making in the hands of private property owners.
Perhaps these are the reasons for pushing the global warming/climate change mantra?

I see I am preaching to the choir. :/ That’s why I’ve been such an advocate both in my town and on my blog, as well as with clients, to start growing their own food. I also have personally experienced and know others, including Ann, who have had good results doing rain dances and/or working with the Elementals and Faery Realm to bring much needed rain. That doesn’t seem to work remotely, but on location, by being deeply rooted to the land that needs the rain, and strongly tuned to the intention for water and for assistance. It will take more than 3D actions to get us out of this mess, even if it is largely aggravated by 3D tools.

Agreed Laura.and I thank you for your work. Are you familiar with John Lamb Lash’s “Planetary Tantra”? He wrote the book, “Not In His Image-Gnostic Vision, Sacred Ecology, and the Future of Belief”. I am just learning of this wisdom. Thanks.
